Social Studies is more than a required course.  Unlike the other disciplines, social studies is an interactive experience which allows us to discuss, dispute, and question our place in the world today.

Student Expectations and Requirements

Students in my class should come to class each day with a writing utensil as well as a composition book for bell work and notes.  Each student is expected to participate in all discussions and lessons.  Your participation will be reflected in your grade at the end of each quarter.  This class requires students be able to analyze and interpret data as well as research topics for presentation so be prepared daily to work with others as well as independently.  If a student misses class for whatever reason, it is that student's responsibility to complete any assignments missed as well as copy any notes or bell work missed on that day.  This class puts most of the responsibility on the student as a stepping stone in preparation for college.  Your grade is a reflection of the work and effort you put into the class, so there is no one to blame but yourself if it doesn't meet your standards.  If you have any additional questions or problems please feel free to see me after school or email me at jdostert@airport.com .

My name is Jordan Dostert.  I have lived and worked in Michigan for my entire life.  I attended Eastern Michigan University for my undergraduate work and I  completed a History Master's program specializing in European and World History with an emphasis on the early modern period in Western Europe and the modern Middle East.  I believe that Social Studies is perhaps the most important yet most neglected discipline students learn in schools today.  Understanding Social Studies allows us to not only understand how our world has changed, but it also explains who we are.  If we ever hope to create a better world we must understand the challenges that exist and have existed throughout time so that we can learn from them and thus improve our time here on earth.
